Not even a grass but a member of the lily family. Slow growing & multiplying sideways by short underground rhizomes – possibly the only truly black plant. We collect & raise a lot of seed & surprisingly half the black seeds come up as green plants which we sell as green mondo…..
Once established a tough dramatic looking swathe of black looking almost like a black animal lying there. Interesting contrast growing them on white limestone chip too – & u can hardly see them in brown bark avoid that combination…
Dainty erect pale lavender flowers become droopy shiny black seeds by summer. Birds do eat & spread them around. If become weedy u can spray over them with weak glyphosate spray – Ive trialled it once with success but can’t say it wud be safe more than once a season – trial yourself carefully as reqd……..
PB3 planter bags of dividable 4-6 sprouts……
